The Billboard Top 100 had four songs mostly in Spanish by 2016 compared to two in the year 2015. In the midst of the Despacito's popularity in 2017, there were 19 mainly Spanish tracks which made it into the Top 100. In 2020, there were 41. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, famous artists started to work with reggaeton musicians. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated for the track MIA MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma. Madonna teamed up with Maluma to record Medellin in the year 2019. Some reggaeton artists lamented the trend towards mainstream music in 2020. But a new group, Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep the development and growth of reggaeton. It was often associated with electronic dance and other styles.
